Is GFuel a Good Pre-Workout?
If you are like me (a gamer) you have purchased GFuel and most likely during their infamous BOGO (buy one get one) which they do a few times a year. And each time they do a BOGO they come out with new flavors.
As this article was being written, they had just come out with another BOGO for you to stock up on your GFuel for the summertime. And I will be discussing if GFuel is a good pre-workout.
Is GFuel a Good Pre-Workout?

According to GFuel on Twitter, “G FUEL is not a pre-workout (it contains zero aminos). It’s a sugar-free energy formula that’s intended to be a healthier alternative to canned energy drinks and sodas. That is all.”
What GFuel is trying to explain is that they made GFuel to give gamers energy and focus, not as a pre-workout. GFuel works more like coffee: the main active ingredient is caffeine.
That said, caffeine is the ingredient in most pre-workouts with the strongest evidence behind it. The International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand on caffeine finds that 3 to 6 mg per kilogram of body weight, taken about an hour before exercise, consistently improves performance.
Check the label for how much caffeine is in your serving, and count it toward your daily total. The FDA cites 400mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults. Medical experts advise against energy drinks for children and teens.
What is BCAA?

BCAAs, or branched-chain amino acids, are three essential amino acids named for their branched chemical structure: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. You get them from protein foods like meat, dairy, eggs, and beans.
Many pre-workouts and recovery drinks add BCAAs, but the evidence for them is weak. A review on BCAAs and muscle protein synthesis concluded that BCAA supplements alone do not promote muscle building.
If you already eat enough protein, skipping BCAAs costs you very little. So GFuel's lack of amino acids is not a big loss.
Conclusion
You can use GFuel as a pre-workout if you wish. It gives you caffeine, which is the main thing most pre-workouts deliver, but it won’t give you the pump from ingredients like citrulline or the tingles from beta-alanine.
GFuel is just an energy supplement and doesn’t have to be used just for gaming. I know some people use it instead of coffee because they don’t like making coffee or don’t like the flavor.
Because it is sugar-free, it skips the sugar found in many canned energy drinks, but the caffeine still adds up.
