  8. Nuts
  9. Whole Grains

1. Chicken Breast

If you are wanting to lose weight and you are not eating chicken breasts then you are not reaping the full benefits of eating whole, unprocessed foods like chicken breasts.

Chicken breast is a weight-loss-friendly food because it’s high in protein, low in fat, and has ZERO carbs.

Why this is my #1 in this list: it is so high in protein that it will fill you up and leave you satisfied. Your body also uses more energy digesting protein than carbs or fat, although the extra calories burned are modest.

2. Whole Eggs

Eggs are one of the easiest and most affordable sources of protein to make.

If you want to start making eggs each morning, buying a larger pack usually lowers the cost per egg. Egg prices change a lot, so compare stores.

In a study conducted with 30 overweight women, it was shown that eating eggs in the morning vs. eating a bagel made them feel more full and satisfied. While then allowed them to eat less throughout their day. Read more

If you have high cholesterol or heart disease, ask your doctor how many yolks fit your diet; egg whites give you the protein without the cholesterol. Here is a product that will do that for you super easily. Or you can just hard boil the eggs and pull out the yolk.

3. Fish

Not all fish are created equal. Some are very good for you and others can be harmful to eat too much of it. Read more

Salmon is one of the healthiest fish you can eat regularly, and canned light tuna is a good budget option. Albacore (white) tuna is higher in mercury, so the FDA lists it as a "Good Choice" to eat once a week, while salmon and canned light tuna are "Best Choices" for pregnant people and children, per the FDA's advice about eating fish.

These fish are very high in protein, like the chicken and eggs, they will keep you full and satisfied. Which will make you less likely to eat unhealthy processed foods.

Fish also have omega-3 fatty acids, which a review found may help lower the risk of several inflammatory chronic diseases. The evidence is stronger for heart health than for others. Read more

Also, studies show that omega-3 fatty acids are linked to a baby’s brain development during pregnancy. Read more

If you do not like eating fish, that is fine because there are also omega-3 supplements. They are generally safe at usual doses, but talk to your doctor first if you take blood thinners. You can purchase them here.

As for the tuna, it is high in protein and cheaper to buy, but it has less omega-3 than salmon, so mix it with other fish. You can either buy it in a can from here. Or in a single package which is easier to have when on the go from here.

4. Lean Beef

Though there has been some beef about red meats having negative health concerns in the past.

One large review found that eating unprocessed red meat was not linked to heart disease or diabetes, while processed meats were linked to higher risk. Other studies do link high red meat intake to type 2 diabetes, so lean, unprocessed cuts in moderation are the safer bet. Read more

In general, lean meat can help with weight loss because it is high in protein and filling. Eating enough protein while in a calorie deficit also helps you retain muscle mass. Low-carb diets work for some people, but studies show several eating patterns can work when calories are controlled, so pick one you can stick with.

A study was conducted to test the effects of a high protein diet and a normal protein diet. The higher-protein diet improved appetite control, made participants feel more satisfied, and reduced late-night desire to eat. Read more

5. Leafy Greens

Leafy greens include kale, spinach, cabbage, romaine lettuce, turnip greens, etc.

These are perfect for weight loss by being low in calories and carbs but loaded with fiber.

Some studies also show that leafy greens are also incredibly nutritious with being very high in many vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals. Including calcium. Some research has suggested calcium may help with fat loss, but the evidence is mixed, so think of it as good for your bones rather than a fat burner. Read more

6. Fruit

Fruit such as bananas, apples, berries, etc. are very healthy for you.

If you are on a keto diet you might want to reduce the intake of fruits you eat each day due to the carbs and sugar that are in fruits.

Some people try and cut down on the sugar that they eat and therefore don’t eat fruit because it has a lot of sugar.

However, whole fruit comes with fiber and water, so it is much more filling than the added sugars in drinks like soda. Fruit can be a good swap when you crave something sweet. Choose whole fruit over juice, which is easier to overdo.

Fruits are high in fiber, antioxidants, and various nutrients that slow the rise of blood sugar after meals.

7. Vegetables

Vegetables such as avocados, carrots, peas, chickpeas, beans, potatoes, etc. are high in fiber and tend to be very filling.

They are also very nutritious, and diets rich in vegetables are linked to a lower risk of some cancers, according to a study. Read more

Adding vegetables to your high protein diet will make a perfect meal to lose weight.

9. Whole Grains

Some whole grains are loaded with fiber and contain a decent amount of protein.

Those whole grains are oats, brown rice and quinoa.

A study in rats showed that retrograded rice (cooked and cooled rice) had higher resistant starch levels and lowered body weight gain, improved lipid profiles, and gut function. Human evidence is still limited. Read more

Beware that some products say “whole grains” on the label but are processed and not healthy for you.

If you are on a keto diet then whole grains are not for you due to the number of carbs that are in them.

You should avoid refined grains and just stick with whole grains if you are trying to lose weight.

10. Full-fat Yogurt

Full-fat Yogurt is an excellent dairy food, if you can tolerate dairy.

Yogurt with live cultures contains probiotic bacteria that may support gut health. It is also a good source of protein and calcium.

Observational studies show that full-fat dairy, including yogurt, is not linked to more weight gain and may be linked to a lower risk of obesity over time. Read more

Whatever fat level you choose, pick plain yogurt. Many flavored yogurts, low-fat or full-fat, are loaded with added sugar. Add fruit yourself instead.

Conclusion

Everything should be done in moderation. There are many more healthy food choices that you can have. These are just my top 10. Just try to eat less processed foods (anything packaged for long storage life) and more unprocessed foods (natural foods that you can find in nature). Also eating healthier is just the start to losing weight. If you combine eating right and exercising then you will start seeing the results you want. And after you get your results you should not just stop eating right and exercising because you achieved your goal. You need to make what you so hardly worked for your lifestyle from now on to not just look and feel better but to also live a longer and healthier life.
